Grand Hospice

Feeding yourself with a GASAP

©️ LeChampPaysan

Yaaay, Le Champ Paysan is back with its organic baskets! As last year, distribution takes place every other Wednesday on the entrance porch on Rue du Grand Hospice, from 6 to 7 pm.

Who are you and what's the concept?

I'm Sébastien and I help Renaud with the communication around his vegetable baskets. We've been delivering to the Grand Hospice every other Wednesday for a year now. These are deliveries of GASAP Volle GAS vegetables to Renaud's Center.

GASAPs (Groupe d'achats solidaires de l'agriculture paysanne) are part of alternative food systems. They involve direct sales, without intermediaries.

What is a GASAP?

More than just an organic basket of vegetables, a GASAP is a direct link with local farms working for sustainable agriculture. GASAPs are the fruit of a citizens' initiative to support peasant farming. The result is a partnership between consumers and producers who make a mutual, long-term commitment.

Eating through a GASAP means reclaiming our food, knowing where it comes from and how it was produced. Producers respect the GASAP Network charter and work in an agroecological manner. What's more, it's very easy to share with them to better understand their work and their way of doing things.

But it's also a simple and tasty way to learn about the challenges of contemporary agriculture, and then, through your choice of consumption, support the societal changes you believe in.

How do you get involved in Brussels?

Renaud delivers his own vegetables every 2 weeks to the Grand Hospice in the Sainte-Catherine district.

With less than 100 km between production and sale, there are no middlemen between grower and buyer, and the vegetables are harvested the same day, so no vitamins are lost. Naturally, the vegetables are not graded and are always in season. Deliveries are convivial moments, with a good beer and a chance to chat with Renaud and the other participants.

What's in store for a Le Champ Paysan basket?

1. Classic basket: 33€/basket for a selection of vegetables, including 2€ for shipping. This is the formula that best benefits Renaud, allowing a better amortization of transport costs and preparation time.

2. Small basket: 22 €/basket for a selection of vegetables including 1.25 € for shipping.

An additional contribution of 0.5 euros per basket is added for the GASAP network. The GASAP network in Brussels supports local producers working according to methods that respect the environment and traditional know-how.

Renaud grows all kinds of vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers, lettuces, zucchinis, carrots, leeks, etc.) and the year's harvests are discussed with GASAP members. A one-year commitment is requested to enable Renaud to plan his planting quantities.
